ETAP is the most comprehensive analysis tool for the design and testing of power systems available. Using its standard offline simulation modules, ETAP can utilize real-time operating data for advanced monitoring, real-time simulation, optimization, energy management systems, and high-speed intelligent load shedding. Has been designed and developed by engineers for engineers to handle the diverse discipline of power systems for a broad spectrum of industries in one integrated package with multiple interface views such as AC and DC networks, cable raceways, ground grid, GIS, panels, arc flash, WTG, protective device coordination/selectivity, and AC and DC control system diagrams. ETAP users must be proficient in using basic operations of Windows ® environment. Use of ETAP does not require training. However, to facilitate the learning process, OTI provides workshops throughout the year in several locations. (Refer to www.etap.com for the up-to-date training schedule.). ETAP allows you to easily create and edit graphical one-line diagrams (OLD), underground cable raceway systems (UGS), three-dimensional cable systems, advanced time-current coordination and selectivity plots, geographic information system schematics (GIS), as well as three-dimensional ground grid systems (GGS). The program has been designed to incorporate to three key concepts: Virtual Reality Operation The program operation emulates real electrical system operation as closely as possible. For example, when you open or close a circuit breaker, place an element out of service, or change the operating status of motors, the deenergized elements and sub-systems are indicated on the one-line diagram in gray. ETAP incorporates innovative concepts for determining protective device coordination directly from the one-line diagram. Strength points: • EASY: Integrated and modular program with a modern and intuitive interface and a high quality graphics. Very easy to use. • POWERFUL: Based on a general approach and then suitable for many applications, in a wide frequency range, with arbitrary conductors network and many soil models including multilayer. • WORLDWIDE: The only software in the market that takes into account International (IEC), European (EN) and USA (IEEE) standards. • VALIDATED: Accuracy validated since 1990 by comparison with results from analytical cases, published research, field measurements, and similar programs. All modules are integrated in an “all in one” package and based on a hybrid calculation method (or “PEEC” method) which considers transmission line, circuit and electromagnetic theory combined into a single calculation model. Hybrid methods join the strong points of the other methods and are well suited for engineering purposes because they allow the analysis of complex scenarios including external parameters such as voltages, currents and impedances. For these reasons, XGSLab can be considered a real laboratory. Me'scope_2017_Training_manual_crack The VES Visual Engineering Series of software packages and options makes it easier for you to observe and analyze noise & vibration problems in machinery and structures using either experimental or analytical data. With ME’scope, you can import or directly acquire multi-channel time or frequency data from a machine or structure, and post-process it. Its industry-leading interactive 3D animation allows you to observe order-related operating deflection shapes from running machinery, resonant vibration and mode shapes from real structures, acoustic shapes, and engineering shapes directly from acquired data. In addition to its photo-realistic interactive animated display, ME’scopeVES contains state of the art tools for performing: • FRF-Based Modal Analysis • Operational Modal Analysis • Vibro-Acoustic Analysis • Dynamics Modeling & Simulation • Structural Dynamics Modification • FEA Model Updating An Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) is the simplest way to see how a machine or structure moves during its operation, either at a specific frequency or moment in time. An ODS contains the overall dynamic response of a structure due to forced and resonant vibration. Time-based ODS animation sweeps a cursor through a set of time histories describing motions at multiple points and directions on a test article. You can stop the animation, back it up, and play it forward to observe in slow-motion phenomena that may have taken place very quickly in real time. With frequency-based ODS animation, you simply move the cursor to a frequency of interest in your data, and the ODS for that frequency is displayed. With this animation, you can observe resonant vibration as well as order-related and other types of forced vibration. Modal analysis is used to characterize resonant vibration in mechanical structures. Each resonance has a specific “natural” or modal frequency, a modal damping or decay value, and a mode shape. FRF-Based parameter estimation (or curve fitting) is used to estimate the modal parameters of a structure from a set of FRFs. At the heart of the Basic Modal Analysis option is the ME’scope Polynomial method, an easy to use MDOF curve fitter. This curve fitter can be used to simultaneously extract parameters for multiple modes, especially in cases of high modal density. It can also extract local modes where the resonant vibration is confined to a local region of the structure. The Multi-Reference Modal Analysis option contains all of the features of the Basic Modal Analysis option, plus additional methods for curve fitting a multiple reference set of FRFs. Multi- Reference curve fitting is used to extract closely coupled modes and repeated roots (two or more modes at the same frequency). This option contains a Stability diagram for locating stable pole estimates, and three additional curve fitting methods: Complex Exponential, Z-Polynomial, and the patented AF Polynomial method. The Standard Edition includes improvements including a new Field Data Editor, Fields Wizard, and field conversion tool. You can use the improved Spot X+Y default merit function, which is now the fastest way to optimize for small spot sizes. One of the most newsworthy features targets an area where engineers have been doing repetitive and frustratingly tedious work: eccentricity modelling, where fictitious elements are introduced to counter modelling errors. Previously, when changes have been made to eccentric members and segmented members, each beam in the model has had to be recalculated manually. A typical offshore jacket structure contains hundreds of beams – in such a scenario, this creates unnecessary and costly manual work. Software for hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and structural analysis. Penn Station (right) was a glorious example— the glass roof let in sunlight which fell through the glass-embedded floor to illuminate the tunnels below. Since sunlight is the superior light source, while flames are dim, smelly, smoky, expensive and dangerous, anything which could extend the reach of the sun's free and safe light to interior spaces would make that space more useful and valuable. Fire at sea is disaster, more so on a wooden ship or with a flammable cargo. Safely lighting a ship's interior with daylight and prisms instead of flames was a practice widely adopted. And lime cargos were especially dangerous (slaking lime becomes very hot). The glasses work both directions: they daylight the hold, but also show on deck any light from a cargo fire. Light used to be provided to vaults and basements by open grates, which were difficult to walk on (especially with women's shoes) and obviously let in water. By placing glass lenses in an iron (or later concrete) frame, daylight could be introduced below while excluding the weather. Iron nubs protruding above the glass surface protect the glass and aid traction. After: vault lights Private collection () Patent drawing In situ (, New York) In 1834, E. Rockwell patented a round iron plate with a single mammoth bulls-eye lens, but Hyatt later complained in his own patent application, ' '. Rockwell's plates are rare today; I know of only three examples of the iron covers, and none of the giant glass jewels. Thaddeus Hyatt () Thaddeus Hyatt's patent basement extension Brown Brothers #4 21' Hyatt Light As an improvement on Cornell, Thaddeus Hyatt in 1845 patented his, an illuminated iron plate set with numerous small, tougher bulls-eye lenses, protected with protruding iron knobs. His Hyatt Lights worked well and were a hit; they made him a rich man. From the 1850s on, Hyatt spent much of his time and fortune fighting for abolition of slavery. The next big advance was Hayward Brothers' 1871. Pendant prisms had been tried before but did not work well. Edward Hayward's idea was to use a semi-prism shape instead: '.the object of my Invention is so to construct them [prisms] that they may not simply allow the light to pass through, but that they may also direct the light in an inclined direction into the rooms it is desired to light.' Using a combination of internal reflection and refraction, the prisms could re-direct and disperse light from the vertical to the horizontal, throwing light from the one bright area deep into the backs of otherwise useless spaces. Prism tile bending light The most familiar type of prism glass are prism tiles, which take the reflection/refraction idea of semi-prism vault lights and applies it to vertical windows. They were based on for window glass with horizontal prisms on the inner surface, and introduced commercially in 1897 by the. 3-Way Prism Co Trademark tile They were an instant success and the tiles were very widely used. Prism tile installations can still be seen in many small towns where they were especially popular as transom lights above storefront windows. Like vault lights, prism tiles take concentrated light from the sky which falls at the front of a room and redirects and diffuses it to the darker parts of a space. Sometimes called 'Luxfer tiles', they were also made by the (with whom they later merged),,, Jupiter Prism Company and others. How a Fresnel lighthouse lens bends light The was developed by in 1822 for magnifying lighthouse lanterns. It is essentially the outer surface of a double-convex lens, but without the core glass. (June 2017) () The show is set in a magical world called Storybook Village, where the title character, Whyatt Beanstalk lives with his friends Pig, Red, and Princess Pea.In each of the episodes either Whyatt or the other main characters have a 'super big problem'. He answers the call and discovers that he or one of the other characters has a 'super big problem'.The main characters will then assemble at the Book Club and introduce themselves and invite the viewer to do so, then the problem is presented and the character who has this problem then explains further. Once the problem is discussed, Whyatt states: 'When we have a question, we look. And Princess Pea casts a magic spell to summon the appropriate book: 'Peas and Carrots, Carrots and Peas. Book come out, please, please, please!' The book then descends from the shelves, and Whyatt, inviting the audience to read along, summarizes the problem faced by the book's characters, drawing a parallel to the problem the Super Readers are trying to solve. They then put their arms in, and one-by-one they twirl around and change to their super identities. Then, Super Why calls out for their Why Flyers. Then the Super Readers jump into them and fly into the storybook. The goal of the Super Readers is to follow the storyline to solve the problem. As they progress through the events of the story, they encounter obstacles, which can be solved by applying their literacy skills to change the story (for instance, changing the prince in ' back into a frog because the princess liked him more that way). As they overcome these obstacles, they are rewarded with red glittery 'Super Letters'. These Super Letters are then uploaded into the Super Duper Computer, eventually forming the word(s) that make up the solution to the 'super big problem.' The viewer is encouraged to look for Super Letters throughout the story and to identify them when they appear. At the conclusion of the Super Story Adventure, all of the Super Letters have been collected, and then the Super Readers fly back to the Book Club. They jump out of their Why Flyers and they change back to their normal selves. The Super Letters are put onto the giant computer screen and are spelled out to show the 'Super Story Answer.' Then one of the Super Readers gives the reason why that particular word or phrase serves as the solution to the Super Big Problem. Once the solution is reached, it is used to wrap up the original problem (Exceptions occasionally occur; for example, in ' Whyatt asks why Santa gives out presents on Christmas Eve). With that resolution, Whyatt shouts out: 'Hip hip hooray! The Super Readers saved the day!' And they sing a song to end the episode. The uncanny, if sometimes distracting, ability to name a solitary note out of the blue, without any other notes for reference, is a prized musical talent - and a scientific mystery. Musicians with perfect pitch - or, as many researchers prefer to call it, absolute pitch - can often play pieces by ear, and many can transcribe music brilliantly. That’s because they perceive the position of a note in the musical stave - its pitch - as clearly as the fact that they heard it. Hearing and naming the pitch go hand in hand. By contrast, most musicians follow not the notes, but the relationship between them. They may easily recognise two notes as being a certain number of tones apart, but could name the higher note as an E only if they are told the lower one is a C, for example. This is relative pitch. Useful, but much less mysterious. For centuries, absolute pitch has been thought of as the preserve of the musical elite. Some estimates suggest that maybe fewer than 1 in 2,000 people possess it. But a growing number of studies, from speech experiments to brain scans, are now suggesting that a knack for absolute pitch may be far more common, and more varied, than previously thought. ‘Absolute pitch is not an all or nothing feature,’ says Marvin, a music theorist at the University of Rochester in New York state. Some researchers even claim that we could all develop the skill, regardless of our musical talent. And their work may finally settle a decades-old debate about whether absolute pitch depends on melodious genes - or early music lessons. Music psychologist Diana Deutsch at the University of California in San Diego is the leading voice. Last month at the Acoustical Society of America meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Deutsch reported a study that suggests we all have the potential to acquire absolute pitch - and that speakers of tone languages use it every day. A third of the world’s population - chiefly people in Asia and Africa - speak tone languages, in which a word’s meaning can vary depending on the pitch a speaker uses. Deutsch and her colleagues asked seven native Vietnamese speakers and 15 native Mandarin speakers to read out lists of words on different days. The chosen words spanned a range of pitches, to force the speakers to raise and lower their voices considerably. By recording these recited lists and taking the average pitch for each whole word, the researchers compared the pitches used by each person to say each word on different days. Both groups showed strikingly consistent pitch for any given word - often less than a quarter-tone difference between days. ‘The similarity,’ Deutsch says, ‘is mind-boggling.’ It’s also, she says, a real example of absolute pitch. As babies, the speakers learnt to associate certain pitches with meaningful words - just as a musician labels one tone A and another B - and they demonstrate this precise use of pitch regardless of whether or not they have had any musical training, she adds. Deutsch isn’t the only researcher turning up everyday evidence of absolute pitch. At least three other experiments have found that people can launch into familiar songs at or very near the correct pitches. Some researchers have nicknamed this ability ‘absolute memory’, and they say it pops up on other senses, too. Given studies like these, the real mystery is why we don’t all have absolute pitch, says cognitive psychologist Daniel Levitin of McGill University in Montreal. Over the past decade, researchers have confirmed that absolute pitch often runs in families. Nelson Freimer of the University of California in San Francisco, for example, is just completing a study that he says strongly suggests the right genes help create this brand of musical genius. Freimer gave tone tests to people with absolute pitch and to their relatives. He also tested several hundred other people who had taken early music lessons. He found that relatives of people with absolute pitch were far more likely to develop the skill than people who simply had the music lessons. There is clearly a familial aggregation of absolute pitch,’ Freimer says. Freimer says some children are probably genetically predisposed toward absolute pitch - and this innate inclination blossoms during childhood music lessons. Indeed, many researchers now point to this harmony of nature and nurture to explain why musicians with absolute pitch show different levels of the talent. Indeed, researchers are finding more and more evidence suggesting music lessons are critical to the development of absolute pitch. In a survey of 2,700 students in American music conservatories and college programmes, New York University geneticist Peter Gregersen and his colleagues found that a whopping 32 per cent of the Asian students reported having absolute pitch, compared with just 7 per cent of non-Asian students. While that might suggest a genetic tendency towards absolute pitch in the Asian population, Gregersen says that the type and timing of music lessons probably explains much of the difference. For one thing, those with absolute pitch started lessons, on average, when they were five years old, while those without absolute pitch started around the age of eight. Moreover, adds Gregersen, the type of music lessons favoured in Asia, and by many of the Asian families in his study, such as the Suzuki method, often focus on playing by ear and learning the names of musical notes, while those more commonly used in the US tend to emphasise learning scales in a relative pitch way. In Japanese pre-school music programmes, he says, children often have to listen to notes played on a piano and hold up a coloured flag to signal the pitch. ‘There’s a distinct cultural difference,’ he says. Deutsch predicts that further studies will reveal absolute pitch - in its imperfect, latent form - inside all of us. The Western emphasis on relative pitch simply obscures it, she contends. ‘It’s very likely that scientists will end up concluding that we’re all born with the potential to acquire very fine-grained absolute pitch. It’s really just a matter of life getting in the way.’ Questions 28-35 Complete the notes below using words from the box. Write your answers in boxes 28-35 on your answer sheet. For years we have been trying to convince our kids that Halloween is all about making your costumes, not buying them. Sadly, this has fallen on deaf ears year after year after year. Our vision of what would be awesome and their vision of what would be awesome has never aligned. Thank you Minecraft! Our kids, like millions of others around the world, are obsessed with all things Minecraft. While I'm not much into gaming myself, I can definitely appreciate the virtues of this game - namely the simplicity and open-ended creativity that it offers. The simplicity in particular is what made this a logical choice for this year's costumes. The pixelized, blocky look of all of the characters make them perfect for construction out of cardboard - which happens to be free and plentiful. After careful consideration of all the possible characters and skins, my son settled on 'Minecraft Steve'. He wanted to make it as recognizable as possible to the most number of people. Our primary goals for the costume were (1) to make it as close to the actual game character as possible and (2) allow for the mobility that will be required during Trick-or-Treating. After 2 weeks, 10 sheets of cardboard, and many late nights, it's safe to say that the results exceeded our expectations. Materials you will need: * cardboard sheets * Photoshop - or similar photo editing software * sheetrock screws * liquid nails * tape - masking and scotch * 3M spray adhesive * Velcro * Gorilla Glue * scrap foam (like the kind used to package computers or appliances) Tools you will need: * color printer * straight edge * utility knife and Exacto knife (with lots of replacement blades) * screw gun/cordless drill Step 1: Gather Your Source Images. I've found that one of the keys to making a great costume is to have it scaled correctly. I've seen lots of pictures of Minecraft costumes where the head is too small compared to the body, or the arms are too large compared to the body and head. These were most likely made with pre-existing cardboard boxes. To make ours truly to scale, we were going to need to make our own boxes. And to do that required a complete set of dimensions. The problem with Minecraft Steve is that there really aren't any action figures to measure (at least not in my house). There are, however, hundreds of papercraft templates out there on the web. Step one is to search for a high resolution template. This will give you every dimension you will need for every component to the body. It will also serve to provide the 'skins' for your boxes. But more about that later. Once you've gathered the dimensions, you will need to then determine your scale factor. Since this costume is for my son, we took our key scaling dimension off of him. Our scaling dimension was measured from his shoulders to the ground. The thought is that the body portion of the costume is supported by his shoulders, and as a result the shoulders of Minecraft Steve need to match this height. The scale factor can then be applied to all of the dimensions from the papercraft template. You are now ready to start cutting cardboard. Step 2: Make the Body. The rectangular box-shape of the body was constructed from three separate pieces. The front surface and side surfaces were made from a single piece of cardboard with two small flanges - one on each side - for easy attachment of the back surface. We attached the pieces together using liquid nails. Sheet metal screws were used to cinch the pieces together and hold them in place while the glue cured. This provides the added benefit of allowing the partially assembled box to be handled before the glue is dry. Next the end cap was added. This too had flanges that were used for gluing to the body section. A square shaped hole was later cut into this end cap to allow my son's head to fit through. Arm holes then need to be added on the side surfaces. Make these oversized to facilitate the process of putting the costume on and taking it off. Tip: score the cardboard before bending to allow for much cleaner folds. Step 3: Make the Head. The head, which is essentially a cube, was constructed three separate pieces. The first piece makes up the top of the head and three sides. The three sides fold down from the top surface, which starts to make up the shape of the cube. The edges are secured together with cardboard angles and liquid nails. Sheet metal screws are again used to hold everything together while the glue dries. The fourth side surface is added and again attached with cardboard angles. If my cardboard sheet were large enough, I would have made this just fold down from the top surface. Lastly, the bottom surface needs to be added. It has a square hole for a head to poke through. This is attached with cardboard angles. Step 4: Make the Arms. The first step is to make your skins. As previously mentioned, we used a high resolution papercraft template as the sorce image for our Minecraft Steve. It took some time to find one that had a high enough resolution to not lose its definition when blown up to 18x its size. Once you settle on your image, open it in Photoshop. Next open up a blank Photoshop file and set the canvas size to exactly match the dimensions of your surface of interest on the costume. For instance, each side of our head measured 16.25 x 16.25 so we set the canvas size to that for all surfaces on the head. Back in the papercraft image, select the surface you wish to enlarge and paste it in the new canvas. Perform a free-transform to stretch it to completely fill the canvas. The file can then be saved to a.pdf. I have attached my.pdfs to this step. Keep in mind, these were sized to fit a 10 year old. They are of a high resolution, so you could stretch them to whatever scale you need. The file can then be opened in Adobe and printed to a color printer. Be sure to print it with no scaling (100% size). To do this, select: Page Scaling>Tile Large Pages. You will have to trim the resulting prints and tape them together. The easiest way to trim the prints is with a sharp Exacto knife and a straight edge. Before attaching your skins, tape all exposed seams on the cardboard with masking tape. This smoothes the transitions and covers the cut edges. Use 3M spray adhesive to attach the skins to your cardboard. Again tape all of the exposed seams - but do so with scotch tape this time so that is not noticeable. As much as I love the 3M adhesive, it does tend to peel back at the edges over time. The tape prevents this. With the heavy construction done, its time for some final details. Velcro the head: The head, which ends up being pretty large relative to the body, needs to be secured in place to prevent it from inadvertently flopping off. We used some strips of 2' Velcro and Gorilla glued them to the body and underside of the head. Eye-hole: Next, cut a hole in the head so that the wearer can see out of it. We cut along the pixel borders to keep it as clean as possible. Hand grips: Since the costume arm is much larger than the wearer's arm, we needed to add a feature that could be grabbed with your hand to keep the arm from falling off. We cut a U shape piece of styrofoam and glued it near the circular hole with liquid nails. This worked really well, and allows for maximum flexibility when defending yourself against creepers or mining for cobblestone. Shoulder pads: Foam was also added under the top surface of the body to prevent the cardboard from digging into my son's shoulders. This significantly improved the comfort of the costume. Other additions and ideas: * Pickaxe: How can you dress up as Minecraft Steve and not have a pickaxe? Click here for some quick and easy instructions--> * Arch-nemesis: Does your Minecraft Steve need a motral enemy? This would have put a serious damper on trick-or-treating. Just wanted to say thanks for the instructions! I ended up finding coardboard sheets at Uline. We made arm holes on the side of the arms complete with foam padding to make it comfy! It's been a big hit this year!! Also a tip for everyone. Our son is small and 7 years old. We scaled down the images to%87 after measuring his arm length compared to this 10 year old size. Worked out perfect!! We put all the images on 'poster sheets' At Walgreens! Two 2' x 8' poster sheets with two extra arms (10 total) for front/back of arms. Of course everyone gets a kick out of the torch that lights up(toy from target). THANK YOU FOR POSTING INSTRUCTIONS! I made the head and arms so far, but am having trouble with the body. I think the templates will fit my son as-is, but The UPS Store wanted close to $50 to print them at the actual size. I asked if they could just print them on multiple sheets of 11x17 (at $2 per sheet). They said that I need to bring the.pdf files in already cropped to that size. I have limited software on my computer and have been able to crop files and save as Front top, front bottom, etc. These are now saved as.jpegs and I cannot see what the actual dimensions are of the new files. I'm starting to panic with Halloween just a few days away.;) Has anyone else had luck doing this? Any suggestions? I'm using NetBeans 6.8 with JRE 1.6.0_17 on a 64-bit Mac w/ OS 10.6.2 (this is all up-to-date). I'm using the GUI Builder to create a JApplet, and it runs perfectly when I 'Run File (shift-F6)' the class directly from my library project. However, I'm having a hard time deploying the applet to run in the browser. First, I had to copy the swing-layout-1.04.jar file around, but I'm still getting the dreaded: basic: Exception: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/jdesktop/layout/GroupLayout$Group I've read around (this fourm, NetBeans docs) and supposedly, my GUI-generated JApplet should use the built-in SE 6 layout libraries, and should not reference the library path org.jdesktop.layout.GroupLayout, but should instead use javax.swing.GroupLayout. So it appears that my GUI Builder is building to SE 5 (when you had to use the swing layout extensions). Is there some GUI builder setting to specify SE 6 vs. Is this what's wrong? Does anyone else see the old org.jdesktop.layout.GroupLayout in their GUI code? I didn't find the Tools->Options->Miscellaneous. Path, but I'm looking around for it. There's another FAQ on FormLayoutGenerationStyle: that also tells GUI builder how to use javax.swing.GroupLayout instead of org.jdesktop.layout.GroupLayout I should be able to find these settings shortly. Thanks, I found the 'Options' path you mentioned. It was in NetBeans->Preferences. My new forms are created with the javax.swing path to the SE 6 layout libraries. My old form didn't change I'll make do. The default Layout Generation Style was 'automatic', but it needed to be set to 'Standard Java 6 Code'. For some reason, when 'automatic', it used the old swing layout extensions (SE 5). Thanks rprastein Joined: 10 Aug 2010 Posts: 5 Posted: Tue Aug 10, 2010 3:17 am Post subject: I found the setting, but it doesn't seem to be working. Also, for some reason, despite my default (and only listed) platform being given as Java 1.6, new database application projects are coming up as Java 5. Since I don't have the jdesktop components on my machine, I can't open the form to change the layout after the application has been created. Anyone have any idea what is going on? This article will help restore service to databases that are corrupt in your Lotus Notes and Domino environment. This document contains the following sections: Database corruption is something to try to to avoid if at all possible. If you run regular maintenance and still encounter corruption, understanding the repair options available will lead to an optimal return to productivity for the impacted database(s). This article is intended for all levels of Lotus Notes and Domino administrators and details the methods available to repair corruption as well as options available to reduce exposure to it. IMPORTANT NOTE: The recommendations that follow do not guarantee prevention or absolute repair of a corrupt database and does not circumvent the need to backup all data as frequently as possible What causes corruption? To begin, what is corruption? A database can be corrupt in structure (the metadata that defines an database) or in content (the structure is fine but content is incorrect). Database corruption can happen in the the following scenario: • An NSF file that is in a consistent state on a running Domino server, then has some operations applied, and some but not all of those operations a properly flushed to disk leaving the NSF in an inconsitent state. So, there are inflight transactions that are not committed. This could be from runtime faults (code defects and/or in memory corruption) leading to a condition where a database can not be properly flushed and/or a crash. • An NSF file that is in a consistent state on a running Domino server, then has a corrupt 'piece of data' applied that is corrupt in structure or content (due to a defect or system problem) and become corrupt in content or structure. This is typically from a software defect. • An NSF file that is in a consistent state on a down Domino server, then has a corrupt 'piece of data' applied that is corrupt in structure or content (a utility outside the scope of Domino) and become corrupt in content or structure. When beginning to troubleshoot database corruption, it is beneficial to consider probable causes. The following are examples of corruption events: • Server crashes, particularly without transaction logging enabled. • An external 3rd party add-in, product, and/or tools that interacts/interfaces with Domino databases in an improper fashion outside the bounds of the Domino design scope. For example, an extension manager that renames an NSF file using operating system command rather than the NSF API. • Improper Administrator data access and/or manipulation of databases. For example, copying/deleting/renaming databases at the operating system level on a live server as opposed to using the administrative tools. An example is copying a database file from a live server to a device not seen by the Domino server. The resulting file can be corrupt due to in flight transactions not yet applied to disk resulting in an inconsistent state. • Resource allocation and configuration issues. Hitting a resource limitation on a live server (running out of disk, memory, handles, etc) results in runtime faults that deny Domino to opportunity to properly flush databases and bring the server to a consistent state. • Hardware issues. Disks, I/O controllers While it should be noted that this list is not all-inclusive, most cases of corruption are found to be related to them. It should be noted that the root cause of a single corruption event is likely not attainable. If working with IBM Support for a corruption issue, root cause can be sought when a reproducible scenario has been defined. Enabling transaction logging greatly reduces the likelihood of corruption and also provides capabilities for analyzing root cause. Reducing exposure to data corruption A foremost measure to reducing exposure to data corruption in a Domino environment is to enable all servers for transaction logging. This simultaneously records all transactions that occur in a database to a transaction log and can be beneficial after system failures when the transaction logs are replayed to restore and recover a database, which greatly reduces server restart time. Additional details, including its benefits and configuration recommendations, can be found in Along with enabling transaction logging for all servers in the domain, regularly scheduled maintenance will provide for greater database integrity. These recommended should be coordinated with other environment maintenance and backup activities for improved overall system health. To gain optional recovery from corruption there are two main aspects with respect to the style of transaction logging installed on the server. • Restart recovery - All types of transaction logging provide this. After a crash this allows the inflight transaction that were not flushed to disk to be applied to the databases and bring the databases to a consistent state. • Archival Logging - The enabled the most extensive form of data recovery that includes restart recovery and point in time recovery for restored databases. This mechanism allows lost content to be restored. Please refer to the transaction logging documentation for further information. Repairing corrupt databases There are times when attempts to prevent corruption fail. If you have or suspect you have a corrupted database, the following tasks can be performed to try to repair the database. Determining the appropriate maintenance for the situation As we begin to repair a corrupted database, regardless if the corruption is indicated by specific error or by 'questionable behavior' when working with a database, it is recommended that the Fixup task be the first tool used to attempt to resolve the issue. If the corruption is specific to a view(s) within the database, consider using Updall (detailed below) before Fixup to attempt to repair the view index. FIXUP When running Fixup, consider the type of database you will be running the task against. More specifically, consider whether the database is a system database such as names.nsf, admin4.nsf, log.nsf, etc. When system databases are the target of maintenance, tasks which associate with them should be stopped. For example, to run Fixup against the Administration Requests (admin4.nsf) database, stop the Administration Process (adminp) task. When the Domino directory (names.nsf) or the Domino log (log.nsf) are the target of maintenance, the, with the Domino server stopped. Fixup can be run against non-system databases such as user's mail databases without stopping any other tasks. Fixing up a database that IS NOT transaction logged and does not participate in the Domino Attachment and Object Service (DAOS) It is recommended that a full scan take place to ensure integrity of the impacted database. In order to accomplish a full scan, the following command should be used: load fixup -F database.nsf The -F parameter forces the Fixup task to scan all documents of the database. Without it, Fixup only scans documents modified since its last run. See in the InfoCenter for more details. Fixing up a database that IS transaction logged and does not participate in the Domino Attachment and Object Service (DAOS) It is not typically the case that a transaction logged database requires Fixup be run against it, but when it is necessary, the following command should be used: load fixup -J database.nsf The -J parameter allows the Fixup task to scan a transaction logged database. If a backup utility certified for Lotus Domino is in use, ensure that a full backup of the database is scheduled as soon as possible. Fixup run against a transaction logged database will assign a new Database Instance ID (DBIID). See in the InfoCenter for more details. Fixing up a database that IS transaction logged and does participate in the Domino Attachment and Object Service (DAOS) In order to repair a DAOS-enabled database that is encountering a corruption issue, the following command should be used: load fixup -J -D database.nsf The -J parameter is a requirement for the Fixup task to operate on a DAOS-enabled database as DAOS requires transaction logging for participating databases. The -D parameter purges or fixes corrupt documents in the specified databases if the document is corrupt, if the DAOS ticket is outdated, or when the NLO associated with the document is missing. If a backup utility certified for Lotus Domino is in use, ensure that a full backup of the database is scheduled as soon as possible. Fixup run against a transaction logged database will assign a new Database Instance ID (DBIID). See in the InfoCenter for more details. After running Fixup, proceed to test the state of the database by performing the same operations or follow the same steps that were taken to arrive at the indication of corruption for the impacted database. If the corruption has not been resolved, the next course of action is to perform a compaction of the impacted database. Fixing up a database and view Indices When repairing a database it may or may not be desirable to rebuild the view indices. By default, fixup repairs view indices which is equivalent to updall -R. The -v switch avoids the rebuild of the view indices. This can improve the turnaround time to repair a database. COMPACT When running the Compact task, consider the type of database it will be operating on as you did when running the Fixup task. The type of compaction to perform on a corrupt database is a copy-style compact. A copy-style compact requires that there be no process accessing the database for the duration of the task's operation and will terminate before its completion if any entity opens the database for read or write. When planning to copy-style compact a corrupt database, ensure that all database users and other tasks related with the database are not accessing it. For the Compact task, it does not matter if a database is transaction logged or participates in DAOS; however, a copy-style compaction will result in a new Database Instance ID (DBIID) and a full backup of the database should be scheduled as soon as possible following the compaction. Compacting a corrupt database When compacting a corrupt database, the following command should be used: load compact -c database.nsf The -c parameter designates the copy-style compaction to take place on the designated database. Database.nsf will be streamed into a temporary file until all data elements have been successfully copied. When the copying has completed, the designated database is deleted from the file system and the temporary file is renamed to replace the file designated during the compact command. While this does not impact the replica ID of the database that Compact is run against, be certain that there is sufficient disk space on the Domino server to allow for the copy to complete. See in the InfoCenter for more details. Compacting a corrupt database and discarding view indexes The scope of corruption in a database may be difficult to discern if the impact is limited to a database's documents or its view indexes. Under these circumstances, it is recommended that a copy-style compaction be run against the database, as well as, discarding the currently built view indexes in the database. To accomplish this, the following command should be used: load compact -c -d database.nsf The -d parameter facilitates the discarding of built view indexes for the database specified in the command. While this parameter ensures that a complete rebuild of view indexes occurs, initial access to each view after this Compact will result in a delay as the view index is built. It should be noted that after running a Compaction with the -d parameter, there is no need to run Updall on the database as all views will be rebuilt upon their initial access. See in the InfoCenter for more details. UPDALL If corruption is specific to a view or views within a database, the Updall task is a beneficial tool to leverage. Consider the view or database to be operated on. Lookups against the view may be impacted until the task has completed. The following recommendations can be run online with the server running. Rebuilding view indexes When rebuilding view indexes for a database, the following command should be used: load updall -R database.nsf The -R parameter will rebuild all currently built view indexes within the targeted database and is resource-intensive. See in the InfoCenter for more details. Rebuilding specific view indexes If the issue has been narrowed to a specific view, it is possible to target this view for rebuild rather than rebuilding all views for a database. By specifying a particular view, the overhead of view rebuilding is significantly reduced. The following command should be used: load updall -T viewname -R database.nsf The -T parameter is used to specify the particular view to rebuild. See in the InfoCenter for more details. Other means of repairing corruption When the prescribed maintenance has run, test the database by performing the same operations or follow the same steps that you took when you encountered the corruption. If the corruption has not been resolved, the next course of action is to attempt to create a new replica of the database. If the impacted database has other replicas in the environment, replacing its instance with an operating system-level copy of a non-impacted replica is often the most effective method of restoring operation to the database. If it is determined that both maintenance and the creation of a new replica does not offer relief and no other replicas exist, the final step to returning operation to the database is to restore the database from backup. Consult with the backup vendor if assistance is required to restore a database. Notes.ini debug If you have worked with IBM Technical Support before, you may have found that it is often recommended that you add a few notes.ini parameters to your Domino Server. The parameters to enable on your server for initial debugging are outlined below: Parameter Description Console_log_enabled=1 Enables console logging and creates the console.log file, which is located in the Domino Data IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT folder. This file will log all the information shown in the console to an organized text file that IBM Technical Support can review. Debug_threadid=1 Outputs ThreadID information to the console.log file and often allows you to correlate information between the NSD, console log, and semdebug files. Once enabled, you will see a hexadecimal value placed before each line on the Console. Example output: [0F30:0002-13B8] 09:31:40 AM Database Replicator started [1E84:0002-0D18] 09:31:42 AM Index update process started [1A78:0002-1F14] 09:31:44 AM Agent Manager started These parameters can be enabled on the Server Console while the server is running by using the 'set config' command (for example, set config debug_threadid=1). File monitoring It is necessary to determine what process could be inducing the corruption in a database. In Microsoft Windows, the tool offers real-time file system and process-level monitoring. NOTE: the corruption must take place with these additional data collection methods in place so data relevant to the issue has been gathered. The recommendations made for repairing a corrupt database should only be used when a corrupt database is encountered. These steps are resource intensive and are counter-productive if built into a regularly scheduled maintenance cycle. Scheduled maintenance recommendations are made in the 'Reducing exposure' section of this article. Sending information to IBM Technical Support If the steps above fail and you plan to contact IBM Technical Support for assistance, collect the following files: 1) Console.log 2) ProcessMon log Place these files into a zip file and open a PMR with IBM Technical Support. If using the, then attach the zip file to the PMR upon opening it. If you open the PMR by calling 1-800-IBM-SERV, then take note of the Exact PMR Number provided. Once you have your PMR number, go to the following website and fill in the fields as seen in the screen shot below with your information and click 'Continue'. On the next screen, browse to the zip file containing the files that you just created and submit it. The Software Engineer that will be troubleshooting your issue will be notified of the files uploaded to your PMR and will begin reviewing this information. First of all welcome to the Spiceworks community, we are glad you are here. Second, is the names.nsf on the server or on your client computer. If it is on the server you may be in a tough spot since that holds the configuration to your domino domain. If its names.nsf on the client computer that is either your personal notes address book or a copy of the names.nsf from the domino server. (Sorry I cant remember if your personal address book is names.nsf or pernames.nsf). If its on the server your best bet is to restore the names.nsf from a backup then reboot the domino server. The other option is to copy a valid names.nsf from another domino server. |
